In the Beginning

Why did God make Eve?  Genesis 2:18, 20b-22

Where did God look first for a companion for Adam?  Genesis 2:19-20a

What was Adam's response?  Genesis 2:23

Let's talk about her self confidence - read Genesis 2:25.  Why do you think she could be naked and not be ashamed?

Can you even imagine having that kind of self confidence??

Whose image was she made in - in other words, who was she like?  Genesis 1:27

Who did God actually tell not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil?  Genesis 2:16-17

What did God say would happen if he did eat of this tree?

So, what actually did happened - read Genesis 3:1-13.

Explain what you think it would be like to walk with God in the cool of the day - Genesis 3:8?

What emotions do you imagine that Eve was experiencing as they faced God?  What were they expecting?  How do you think she felt after seeing God face to face?

What is her punishment?  Genesis 3:16

What does her name mean and who names her?  Genesis 3:20

Her Days as a Mother

What is her first child's name?  Genesis 4:1

Who helped her with her delivery?

What is her second child's name?

We all know that as Moms that we need help when we give birth and raise our children.  Where do you think Eve got help?

Who was her role model?

Do you think she fell madly in love with her children as we do today?

Do you think that she kept thinking about God's last words to her?  Do you think she felt guilty?  How would she be able to handle these emotions?  Genesis 3:14-15

Eve's Mothering Pain

What happened between Cain and Abel?  Genesis 4:3-9

What was Cain's punishment? Genesis 4:10-17

How do you think Eve felt?  Do you think that this was part of her punishment?

Did Cain's sin come from Eve's decision to sin, from her mothering or from Cain, himself??

Who did Eve give birth to last?  Genesis 4:25 Who did she say gave her this child?

Who was this child to replace?

Do you really think that a child can be replaced?

Major Points from Eve's life:

  • She knew God intimately and enjoyed a perfect life, but it still wasn't enough. Always in the heart of men/women is the desire to be in control - Eve wanted to be like God. We will always turn towards our own selfish nature instead of obeying God. That is why Jesus had to make the ultimate sacrifice for our sinfulness. Nothing we can do will ever be good enough for a Holy God, but accepting Jesus' sacrifice provides the covering for our sinfulness. We would have made the same decision that Eve did, because we have the same sinful nature without a saving relationship with Christ.

  • Even when there is only 1 man and 1 woman, God still brought Adam and Eve together as husband and wife. His desire was that they would be united to one another for life. God still knew that marriage would be hard since we are so self-centered. God's plan for committed marriages is best for us and our children.

  • Eve had characteristics of God just as Adam did. Adam was made in the image of God as was Eve (Genesis 1:27).

  • Eve experienced the pain of childbirth because of her separation from God. Now we too experience the pain of birthing children. But just as our sin is painful until we receive Christ as our Savior - our birth pains are difficult until we hold our new born child. The pain of the birth disappears and overwhelming Mother love comes forth. The same is true with our birth in Christ - He bears a painful death to provide us with overwhelming love. Eve is the first example of this love.
